World-renowned artist David Hockney brings Christmas cheer to London’s Battersea Power Station with Bigger Christmas Trees
One of the world’s greatest living artists, David Hockney, has unveiled his latest work Bigger Christmas Trees at London’s Battersea Power Station, home to Apple’s new U.K. headquarters. From 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. today, December 1, until Christmas Day, a pair of Christmas trees will light up the London landmark’s two washtowers on the building’s north facade. Drawn on an iPad Pro using Apple Pencil, Hockney’s stunning 10-minute animation transforms the iconic 100-metre-high chimneys that overlook the River Thames.
“Battersea Power Station is such a beautiful building, I wanted to decorate it in a way that I hoped would bring joy and hope to Londoners,” said Hockney.
“David is one of the world’s most important and influential artists, and we couldn’t be more excited to see his latest creation lighting up Battersea Power Station,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “It is a privilege for us that he chooses iPad for his work, and to create this beautiful Christmas gift for the people of London.”
For over 15 years, David Hockney has used Apple products in his work — starting with iPhone in 2007 and then iPad since its original release. iPad has been instrumental in work that includes a glass window at Westminster Abbey and several exhibitions. In the midst of the pandemic, Hockney captured the unfolding of spring, creating new and optimistic works in praise of the natural world. 220 for 2020 ultimately resulted, along with a 90-metre-long scrollwork, A Year in Normandie.
Apple inaugurated its new U.K. headquarters and a new Apple Store at London’s Battersea Power Station earlier this year. Apple’s deepening commitment now sees it support more than 550,000 jobs in the U.K. The 500,000-square-foot, six-story U.K. headquarters runs on 100 percent renewable energy and has been designed around collaboration, inclusivity, wellness, and sustainability.
